Eumetsat, Darmstadt, Germany

November 1st, 2006 by John Pepper

Eumetsat, Darmstadt, GermanySpice were part of a software bid by Logica, to design and install modular work-station consoles, for the new Darmstadt/Eumetsat facilities. The bid was accepted by the client and subsequently joint meetings were held with all concerned, in Darmstadt, to discuss the projects and other information with regard to hardware and equipment. Subsequently Spice developed the concept, which became a double layer modular control desk, housing six 19″ HP screens with C.P.U.’s and associated perimeter video equipment ect.

The design concept was processed from original sketch drawings, through to the early ergonomic trials, to a full working prototype which was signed off and subsequently manufactured by moulds and tools to produce G.R.P. consoles. Read the rest of this entry »

Eutelsat, Paris

November 1st, 2006 by John Pepper

Eutelsat, ParisFollowing a recommendation by Logica, Spice Design were introduced to EUTELSAT who subsequently requested proposals for a modular console, suitable for SCC (Satellite Control Room) and CSC (Television Monitoring Control Room).

The design concept development commenced March 1996 and is due for delivery mid-July 1996. The modular consoles were designed in three types ie: a curved two section, curved three section, and a straight two section to facilitate the different footprint designs of the control rooms within the new facility building based in South West Paris.

Each module is designed to incorporate a worktop mounted telephone system, sloping keyboard rest area, 19″ rack mounted frame in base unit, and special 19″ rack frame endorsing g.r.p. modular pod to be worktop in low profile recessed area to the rear of the desk. Particular emphasis with regard to low profile was required by EUTELSAT to solve the problems of operator vision over the 21″ monitor screens and the 19″ rack pods to view the curved monitor wall displaying up to 108 television monitor screens. Colt Communications, London

November 1st, 2006 by John Pepper

Colt Communications, LondonSpice Design were retained by COLT to create a new Network Control Room console to replace the previous console design by Spice which had been outgrown by their rapidly expanding business. The Brief was to design a console based upon our modular approach to allow future additions for the next four years. This necessitated the provision of potentially 40 no 19″ screens, keyboards and c.p.u’s. The physical restrictions of space available within the proposed floor, meant that this would require a three tiered module.

The final solution provided full access to the near and front of each module for reloading and maintenance of all the kit within. Out photographs reflect a console which houses 24 monitors and keyboards with the total capacity of 39 of each, plus telephone and security cameras. Read the rest of this entry »

Metropolitan Police, Kent

November 1st, 2006 by John Pepper

Metropolitan Police, KentThe building is a 19th Century Dutch gabled house set in 17 acres of landscaped park, which formally belonged to a diamond merchant. The building committee therefore were obliged to retain the high Victorian standards of interior fitments and appointed Spice to produce design proposals for upgrading and enlarging bar lounges and conservatories containing traditional polished hardwood joinery, bar counters and screens, set against an elegant backdrop of velvet drape curtains with swags and tails, deep pile Wilton carpets and pattern sofas.

To broaden the appeal for Police families, Spice Design initiated a design for a children’s playroom, which is decorated with hand-painted murals and children’s furniture. The investment by the building committee has been seen to be effective with a favourable response from the members and plans for continued upgrade of other bars and a ballroom area is proposed for the future. Metropolitan Police, SurreyA major refurbishment to the ground floor of the Metropolitan Police Sports and Social Facilities, provided a complete change of image and function. The new facility provides 3 No. bars and large restaurant servery for both members and visitors alike. The use of sliding fabric and timber screens enable the ground floor to house five different functions at one time.

The rich to hot colours provide a warm and friendly atmosphere with modern but classic familiarity to both the old and young which now has rekindled the falling membership with the club now experiencing great enthusiasm for all social events organised, with new members and old ones returning.
