This was the opportunity for Spice to prove their ability within the architectural and planning field, incorporating full interior design combining bespoke elements and high specification fixtures and fittings.
The building facia incorporates handmade brick work with feature arched windows, with dormered mansard roof, reflecting a warehouse style dwelling, sitting nicely between our own studios of a similar style and Devonshire Mansions. The cost of the development incorporating all professional fees was £1,000,000.00, £800,000.00 of which was the building cost. The development has full NHBC certification.

This 1920’s house had inherent character and quality, especially to the windows, which provided beautiful natural light to 3 elevations. To this end, all services, walls, plaster work were stripped back to bare brick shell.
From Basement to Roof all existing structure was removed, including excavation of the basement approach, forming a stone stairway and balustrade of generous proportion to enable the basement to become a feature within the room. With removal of the old coal shute walls, we have created a utility area and boiler housing with its own natural light thru’ a larger sub ground window and escape light well to car parking area. The basement has also been fully tanked out.
All new partitions to ground floor are constructed to top specifications, consisting of twin skin plaster board to both sides of 75mm metal stud work with acoustic infill. All skirtings and architraves are set into outer skin with stop beads and final plaster finish, creating a continuous separation detail between all wood work and plaster finish. The client’s brief for the design and colour schemes were to be progressive and commensurate with the level of corporate visitors to the building.
Although the brief was unrestricted, Spice were required to consider a number of practicalities which included retaining existing brown granite finishes to flooring and lift lobby surround.
The original reception area was thought by the bank to be gloomy and corporately impersonal, therefore the emphasis was placed on providing interesting and effective lighting embracing the new planning requirements for a strategically located ‘greeter’ reception desk, in front of a new system of turnstyle gates .
As the planning brief was developed, Spice drew the client’s attention to the possibilities of using the available space, not only for a visitor waiting area, but also for informal meetings with low level purpose-made glazed separation screens. Read the rest of this entry »
